The Wet Spot

Like most families, we have our routines that allow us to live our lives in a way that makes it possible to survive with our sanity. The boy goes to bed very early - about 7:30 p.m. - and is an early riser as well. So, in order to eek out another 15 or 20 minutes of rest in the morning, we take things to the boy that will help him to be quiet for just a little longer. This can range from a little teddy bear (in addition to the one he sleeps with) to a train to a sippy cup of water.

One we make it to 6:45 or so, we bring him to our bed - complete with pillow and whatever we have given him to make him shut the hell up to entertain him for the morning - and flip on cartoons so that we can rest or get ready for the day, whichever is necessary at the moment.

So now that you understand a little more about our morning routine, I give you Tuesday morning. Normal in most respects with the boy calling to us to "GEETTTTTT UUUUUUUP!!!" at about 6:30 a.m. At about 6:50 he ends up in out bed and starts yacking away about "bear" and "bath" and "oooh, chilly" and me, I didn't blink an eye. Because they were closed.

The boy had unscrewed the lid of the sippy cup (I know! What the hell?), dumped 8 ounces of fresh-from-the-fridge-dispenser cold water on the bed and screwed the lid partially back on. And I didn't realize any of this until I moved my arm into the wet spot. Talk about a shock in the morning. The boy was quite proud of himself.

Thankfully, the boy only got his socks a little damp and Bear survived with only a slightly soggy paw - unlike a few weeks ago when he pulled the lid of another sippy cup and gave Bear a "bath" in his own bed and announced "Bear all clean!" happily when we went to get him up - so all I had to wash was the sheets and try to figure out how to lay out the comforter so that that it would dry.

Lesson learned: a wet spot in the bed just isn't any fun unless you get to make it yourself.
